Cliff was a good friend. Not only was he an active member of our "Grumpy Old Men" Book Group, but may have been one of the founding members of its predecessor the Pulitzer Prize Novel Reading Group. The reading and book groups met every other month but where I really got to know Cliff was our meeting at Charlie's Diner in East Aurora, NY every Thursday at 10 AM. Even though we stayed away from politics, religion or money, there were always four or five of us in attendance for a spirited conversation that filled up the morning. My schedule would twist and turn to accommodate these gatherings. I would not have missed them for the world and I know he wouldn't have either. This went on for years until he decided to be near family in Gerry.
Six of us meet for coffee every Wednesday at a different location now. Cliff is with us. Cliff will always be with us.

Romans 12: 4-8
For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.
Cliff served, he taught, he encouraged, he gave generously, he lead, and he showed mercy. And Lord knows, he had to show a lot of mercy to a lot of children, including me. Hopefully, a small gesture will continue this legacy through others who share his gifts. A donation has been made in Cliff's memory to Lutheran World Relief of Canada.
