Obituary of Mary L Nowell
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Our beloved mother, Mary Lou Nowell, peacefully passed away while surrounded by numerous family members at St. VIncent's Hospital in Erie, PA, on January 28, 2023. Mary was born in Jamestown, New York on October 24, 1942 and was the daughter of the late Floyd and Dorothy Winton. She spent her childhood growing up on a farm in Sinclairville, New York. During her 80 years of life, Mary lived in the state of California, but spent most of her years in New York, residing in the towns of Lakewood, Jamestown, and most recently, Gerry.
Mary is survived by seven children: Cynthia (Michael) McIntyre of Randolph, NY; Richard (Takako) Nowell, Jr. of Ashville, NY; Steven (Tess) Nowell of Jamestown, NY; Susan (Stanley) Thomas of Jamestown, NY; Dana Nowell of Frewsburg, NY; Cory Nowell of Jamestown, NY, and Melissa (Louis) Nowell of Cleveland, Ohio, as well as 20 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild. She was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Brian Nowell in July 2022; a granddaughter, Amy Ellen Nowell in March 2021; a sister, Esther Smith; and a brother, Archie Winton.
Mary enjoyed music and was a lifelong fan of Elvis. Reading, gardening, and crossword puzzles were favorite pastimes, and she took great pleasure in exploring social media websites and looking at family pictures on her tablet. She loved to visit new places and had especially fond memories of a trip to Japan to visit her son. Mary adored her dog Shorty, who was an important part of her life for many years. Prior to retirement, she was employed by Heritage Park Ministries for 25 years.
Anyone who knew Mary realized that her greatest love was for her children. Although she was the mother of eight, she made time for everyone. She was always available to spend time with her grandchildren, whom she adored and enjoyed immensely. Likewise, they were always excited and happy to see her and content under her care. She was a good friend to many and always had time to listen to anyone who wanted or needed her attention.
Though Mary’s health was failing for years, few people knew the extent to which she struggled. It would be wrong to say that Mary lost her battle with the illnesses that plagued her because she never stopped fighting. No matter how sick she was, she remained determined. Through her, we learned what resilience and perseverance truly looks like.
As Mary wished, she will be laid to rest beside her son at Lakeview Cemetery in a private service for family members.
